PRETORIA STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIER CLUB OPEN SHOW

(Judge: BRIG GEN NJ DU PREEZ)

11th February 2006 Menlo Park High School Pretoria (39 entries)

Overview from the Judge

With the cool, rainy weather, a great show committee, a kind and efficient ring steward and many lovely Staffordshire Bull Terriers, I could not ask for more. For this I thank all that was involved with the organization of a well run Show as well as all the exhibitors that allowed me the privilege to judge their dogs. I recognize the time and commitment it takes to arrange a Show and to prepare and show dogs! Once again, thank you for your kindness, your entries and your participation. It was my honour to have been able to judge at this wonderful club.

In general, I saw all the dogs shown on the day in good condition and most were handled well. There were a lot of really good heads with deep broad skulls. I found coat and eye pigmentation to be quite good overall. All the males that I went over were complete with fully descended testicles and all dogs were smooth coated.

DOGS (21 ENTRIES)

BABY PUPPY CLASS: 1 ENTRY

Marque Diesel

1st place: no 14  -Strong-headed black baby puppy dog. Nice black eyes well set apart looking straight ahead and black nose. Correct rose ears, strong under jaw well pronounced cheek muscles and short strong foreface. Still teething. Strong bodied for a baby puppy with good spring of rib, ample bone with straight clean legs that are set well apart and strong pasterns, short neck, slightly long cast but top line still level with well angulated stifles with good muscling and short hocks. Tail carried low as per the standard. Too playful to assess his movement correctly.

PUPPY CLASS: 2 ENTRIES

Kelev Super Star

1st place: no 29  - Beautiful and strong-headed black brindle puppy dog. Wonderful rose ears that are well placed on the head, strong under jaw with well-pronounced cheek muscles, strong dark nose and well-placed dark round eyes. Mouth correct scissors bite. Straight front with ample bone and legs set wide apart with strong pasterns and tight feet. Short-coupled body with well-angulated shoulder placement and a short strong neck with good spring of rib. Level top line and well-developed and angulated hindquarters and well let down hocks. Moved parallel both coming and going but rather lacking in drive viewed from the side. Still immature but with lots of promise.

Larumo One an Only

2nd place: no 20 – Black puppy dog with white chest and front socks. Lovely headed pup with good strong short foreface and well developed under jaw and correct scissors bite. Deep head with well developed cheek muscles and dark round and well placed eyes. Legs straight and well boned and set wide apart with strong pasterns and strong compact feet. Well-developed strong short neck but slightly long cast in back. Well boned with good substance and adequately bent stifles. Unfortunately had hurt it’s left hind leg and could therefore not move properly or be assessed on movement.

JUNIOR CLASS: 1 ENTRY

Rioghal Opening Partner

1st place: no 31 – Red-smut dog. This is a well-balanced dog with many virtues. Beautiful headed youngster with deep shapely head with pronounced cheek muscles, broad skull with strong well-developed foreface, strong under jaw and correct scissor bite and black nose. Eyes round and well placed apart, that enhanced his expression and the eyes matched his coat color. Ears small and rose pricked but set on a bit wide on the head. Straight front with ample bone and tight strong feet and strong pasterns. Short strong muscular neck and deep brisket with correct spring of rib with well laid shoulders and front legs set rather wide apart.  A tad long in back but still displaying a level top line. Stifles could do with a bit more angulations but with well let down hocks and standing squarely. Moved parallel in front but a bit to close at the back and could do with more drive. Correctly shaped medium length tail carried low. A very promising young dog with a lot to offer, that was also awarded BEST JUNIOR ON SHOW

GRADUATE CLASS: 2 ENTRIES (1 WITHDRAWAL NO 12)

Niccyn Portos

1st place: no 4 – Red-dog with white chest markings. Nice typey Stafford with yet another good head with short deep and broad skull with pronounced cheek muscles, distinct stop, short strong foreface, well developed under jaw and correct scissors bite with a black nose. Dark eyes that matched the coat color, rounded and set wide apart and looking straight forward. Beautiful thin rose prick ears placed correctly on the head so as to enhance the expression. Neck well muscled but a bit on the long side but nevertheless flowing into a short-coupled shapely body with level top line. Deep brisket with good spring of rib and straight front with tight strong feet legs could be set a little wider apart. Well-developed hindquarters with short hocks and well turned stifles. Medium length tail carried on low. Movement was a bit disappointing as he toed in coming and going away.

SA BRED CLASS: 2 ENTRIES

Ch Sylon Black Jack

1st place: no 3 – Black-brindle dog. Good head but lacked a bit in foreface and overall power and could do with more cheek muscling. Eyes dark and round well placed. Rose prick ears that are small and thin but set on a bit too wide on the skull. One misplaced tooth, otherwise correct under jaw.  Strong muscular short neck with deep brisket and well sprung ribs. Wide front with sufficient straight bone and tight strong feet. Slightly long cast in body but with well developed hindquarters with ample muscling and well bent stifles and hocks short and strong. Tail carriage low and correct. Moved closed in front and behind with not enough drive.

Kelev High Hopes

2nd place: no 27 – Black dog with white chest markings. Lost to the winner on top line and overall soundness. Good Strong foreface and under jaw well developed and strong. Correct scissors bite. Well placed round eyes that are a bit on the light side for a black dog. Ears rose prick small and thin. Good bone but not enough layback of shoulder that ruined his front movement. Dippy top line but with well-muscled hindquarters and correct tail set and carriage. Moved close coming towards and going away and displaying a dippy top line on the move.

VETERANS CLASS: 1 ENTRY (WITHDRAWN)

 OPEN CLASS: 8 ENTRIES

 CH Sylon Borris

1st place: no 2 – Red smut dog with white chest markings. This is a super well-balanced dog filled with virtues. Correct size and very typey, with maximum substance for size and no coarseness. Beautiful headed dog with dark, almost black, round widely set eyes looking straightforward that enhances his expression. Short strong foreface, correct scissors bite and deep under jaw. Ears rose prick, small and thin but set on a little too wide on the skull. Short muscular neck flowing into deep brisket and short level top line. Strong straight front with ample bone and sound strong feet with well-laid shoulders and legs set wide apart. Well-sprung ribcage. Developed and muscled hindquarters with ample turn in stifle and short hocks, standing squarely and balanced for his size. Tail carriage a bit high of medium length and tapering to a point.  Coat smooth, short and close. Movement parallel both coming towards and going away with ample drive from the side.

Riefra Macho Man

2nd place: no 23 – Red-Fawn dog with white chest markings. This is a top sized dog, slightly on the big side of the scale in height but of great quality and type. Not as short in body and compact as the first place but still with good power and overall substance and balance. Deep skull with strong short foreface and correct scissors bite. Dark round and well placed eyes. Ears small and thin that are rose prick and set on well on the head. Short thick neck and shapely square forequarters with ample bone and no coarseness with tight strong feet legs set well apart. Good spring of rib but a tad long in back compared to the winner. Well-developed hindquarters with good turn in stifle. Movement parallel coming towards but a bit close going away but with sufficient drive viewed from the side.

Bernacios Knersus of Raminartus

3rd place: no 12 – Dark chocolate brindle dog.

CHAMPIONS CLASS: 4 ENTRIES

 Ch Sylon Leo

1st place: no 1 – Black dog with white chest markings. I really liked this dog and the more I looked at him the better I liked him. He caught my eye the moment he entered the ring. A well-balanced dog of medium size, packed with type and virtue. His overall balance and outstanding head almost puts him in a class of his own. He exhibits strength and quality throughout his body construction; a well constructed and sound dog and not overdone in any way. Good bone to muscle balance with ample substance for his size. Beautiful deep broad skull with short strong foreface with very pronounced cheek muscles, distinct stop and large black nose. Correct scissors bite with a well-developed strong jaw and clean tight lips.  Round black, medium sized eyes looking straight ahead. A keen intelligent expression. Muscular short neck flowing into the shoulders. Deep brisket with well sprung ribs and ample space for the lungs. Quality bone on straight forelegs that are set wide apart, but not overdone or coarse with tight strong feet turning slightly outward. Short compact body with correct level top line. Well turned and muscled stifles and powerful hindquarters with well developed second thigh and strong well let down short hocks. Tail well set on carried low of medium length and tapering to a point. Movement parallel coming towards but a little close going away but with sufficient drive. Great condition of coat and skin and handled well, he commanded my attention and only a pleasure to award him BEST DOG AND BEST IN SHOW.

Ch Bernacois Tiger of Raminartus

2nd place: no 13 – Black brindle dog with small white marking on chest. Another quality Stafford that excels in type, power and soundness. Very unlucky to come up against the winner on the day, who toped the scale with his overall balance and tremendous ring presence.  Wonderful head deep and broad throughout. Neat, thin rose prick ears that are well placed on top of the head. Dark round eyes well placed looking straight ahead. Correct scissors bite with strong jaw and clean, short and strong foreface. Short strong neck with straight front with ample bone and strong pasterns and tight feet with legs set rather wide apart. Well-sprung ribcage and deep brisket with level top line, though not as compact as the winner but with enough power and standing squarely. Well-angulated and muscled stifles and hindquarters with correctly placed tail set on low. Moved parallel in front but a bit close behind lacking a bit in drive compared to the winner.

Ch Richmax Blue Blood

3rd place: no 22 – Black dog with small white neck and chest markings.

 BITCHES (18 ENTRIES)

 BABY PUPPY: 5 ENTRIES

Rioghal Stop N Stare

1ST Place: no 32 – Black brindle bitch with white chest markings. Lots of virtues in this baby. Lovely headed bitch with strong yet feminine head. Black round eyes well placed wide apart. Strong short muzzle with black nose still teething but mouth shows no sign of problems. Ears rather a bit big and set too wide on the head. Lovely strong round bone on straight forelegs but without coarseness and promising chest development. Shortly coupled and well-balanced everywhere with level top line. Good angulations in the hind quarters and tailed carried a bit high. Handled very well but was still a bit too playful to assess movement properly.

Larumo Jagged Ice

2nd place: no 18 – Black brindle baby puppy bitch with white chest marking. A younger and smaller puppy with not as strong head as the winner and not carrying the same bone density as the winner. Still teething, but no problems evident. Black eyes well placed on head displaying good expression. Ears still a bit large and set on wide on the head but should improve with age. Overall a good quality and balanced puppy with straight front and strong feet for a pup. Well-bent stifles with clean straight top line and tail set a bit high. Still too playful to assess movement properly.

Sylon Twister

3rd place: no 5 – Red baby puppy with white chest marking.

PUPPY CLASS: 3 ENTRIES

Kelev Black Pearl

1st place: no 30 – Black brindle bitch with white chest marking. I really liked the type of this bitch. Correct balance and a lot of style and elegance. Strong deep head with ample broad skull for a bitch but not overdone. Distinct stop with black eyes well placed on head so as to look straight ahead. Well-developed muzzle that is short and strong with clean tight lips and teeth scissors bite, strong and perfectly regular and black well-developed nose. Ears small and thin well placed on head and rose prick. Clean straight front with ample bone and strong pasterns with tight feet. Good depth of brisket with ample spring of rib for her age. She has a level top line and is rather short and compact.  Well-developed and angulated hindquarters with short hocks with low set and carried tail. Good parallel mover both coming towards and going away with drive in the hindquarters. A lot of true potential and promise in this very attractive puppy bitch that was also awarded BEST PUPPY IN SHOW.

Niccyn Bubbles

2nd place: no 6 – Brindle puppy bitch with white chest marking. Slightly longer cast and in body and a bit more leggy than the winner but with similar bone density and overall feminine quality. Very nice deep strong head with strong developed short muzzle with correct scissors bite and dark well placed eyes. Ears still a bit soft and placed to the side of the head. Elegant neck that flows into shapely forequarters and straight front with strong feet and pasterns. A tad long cast but with level top line and well angulated and muscled hindquarters with hocks a little to long in comparison with those of the winner. Movement a bit close coming towards as well as going away but with sufficient drive viewed from the side.

Kelev Dainty Bess

3rd place: no 28 – Black brindle bitch with white markings.

JUNIOR CLASS: 1 ENTRY

Tilni

1ST Place: no 43 – White and red pied bitch. A very typey bitch that was nicely balanced and who stood squarely. Strong head with ample bone and depth with a broad skull displaying good cheek muscle development and a correct short foreface. Mouth correct scissors bite and nice clean and tight lips. Medium sized black eyes set on to look straight ahead with good expression. Rose prick ears set on nicely on the head that enhances her expression. Short, muscled neck flowing into a compact and closed coupled body with deep brisket and well sprung ribs. Straight front with ample bone and legs set wide apart. Nice strong tight feet and straight pasterns. Top line is a bit roachy. Hindquarters strong well muscled with ample turn in stifle and well developed second thigh with short hocks. Tail set on low and carried correctly in pump handle fashion. Movement straight and parallel in front but close behind and could do with more drive.

SA BRED CLASS: 1 ENTRY

Frelonius Shani

1st place: no 11 – Red smut bitch with white chest. Another very typey bitch with good substance and bone development. Lovely shaped strong head with a broad skull and pronounced cheek muscling and a short strong foreface with correct scissors bite. Black nose with tight clean lips. Medium sized black eyes set on a bit to close that spoiled her expression for me. Ears rose prick and set on correctly on the head. She has a strong short and well-muscled neck for a bitch, which flows nicely into a deep chest with a well-sprung ribcage and a strong straight front with ample bone and legs set wide apart. Feet are strong and compact with straight strong pasterns. Slightly long cast body but still with a level top line. Well-angulated and muscled hindquarters with short strong hocks. Tail set on low and carried correctly in pump handle fashion. Her movement was a bit close in front as was the hind action with not enough drive.

IMPORTED BITCH CLASS: 1 ENTRY

 Shayla

1ST place: no 44 - Red bitch with white markings. Nice typey Stafford with yet another good head with short deep and broad skull with pronounced cheek muscles, distinct stop, short strong foreface, well developed under jaw and correct scissors bite with a black nose. She has dark eyes that matched the coat color, rounded and set wide apart and looking straight forward. Beautiful thin rose prick ears placed correctly. Elegant neck that flows into shapely forequarters and straight front with strong pasterns. A tad long cast but with level top line and hindquarters not her virtue as they are a bit straight and requires more muscling with the hocks a little on the long side. Tail set on low and carried correctly as per the standard. Her movement was a bit close in front as was the hind action with not enough drive and displaying a rather dippy top line on the move.

VETERANS CLASS: 3 ENTRIES

Gen-Gen

1st place: no 46 – 12-year-old fawn bitch with white chest. A well conditioned old dame with a lot of style and elegance for her advanced age. She has a feminine head but still with good depth. Foreface short and strong with tight lips and still a correct scissors bite. Eyes dark, round and set on to look straight ahead. Ears are half prick but I would have liked somewhat smaller and tidier ears. Even for her age she displayed a straight front with ample bone and strong pasterns. Deep enough brisket and well sprung ribs. A tad long cast in body but still with a correct level top line. Well turned stifles although she has lost her muscle tone with age and strong short hocks. Tail carriage is low and correct in accordance with the standard. Her movement was good for her age and the best by far of the three competitors in this class. Parallel in front and back but lacking drive viewed from the side.

Riefra Golden Mir

2nd place: no 8 – 10 year old red bitch. Also a well conditioned old dame with a lot of elegance for her advanced age. She is slightly longer cast and in body and a bit more leggy than the winner but with similar bone density and overall feminine quality. Very nice deep strong head with strong developed short muzzle with correct scissors bite and dark well placed eyes ears rose prick and set on correctly on her head. Short neck and deep brisket with a straight front with ample bone and strong pasterns. A little long in back, but with well-angulated and muscled hindquarters with short strong hocks. Tail set on low and carried correctly. Did not move as well as the winner and her movement is close coming towards and going away and rather lacking drive viewed from the side and displaying a dippy back.

Kasha

3rd place: no 45 – 13-year-old white and red-pied bitch.

OPEN CLASS: 3 ENTRIES

Velvetine Galadrial of Sylon

1st place: no 7 – Black coated bitch. A young, but lovely bitch with nice expression that makes a very balanced picture throughout. Beautiful feminine head with lots of quality displaying a short deep broad skull and foreface with clean lips and correct scissors bite. Black eyes and set wide apart still looking straight ahead.  Neat rose pricked ears well set on the head that enhanced her piercing expression.  She has a clean straight front with good pigmentation and ample bone with tight strong feet and pasterns with her legs set wide apart. Deep brisket and level top line with well-angulated and muscled hindquarters. Tail medium length, low set and tapering to a point carried in correct pump handle fashion. She is a free powerful mover with ample drive and parallel when viewed front and rear.

Bulvah Lady Begeeta

2nd place: no 9 – Red bitch with white chest markings. Beautiful headed with dark, almost black, round and widely set eyes, looking straightforward that enhance her expression. Short strong foreface, correct scissors bite and deep under jaw with clean tight lips. Ears half prick, and set on a little too wide on the skull.  Short neck and deep brisket with well sprung ribs. Good bone on the legs that are set wide apart. She is a little upright in shoulder placement and her left elbow is out, rather spoiling her front. A little long cast but still displaying a level top line. She has well-angulated hindquarters with good muscling and hocks strong and well let down. Tail carriage is correct in accordance with the standard. Her movement parallel when coming towards but close going away and can do with more drive viewed from the side.

Sylfame Stunning Mover

3rd place: no 17 – black bitch with white chest markings.

CHAMPIONS CLASS: 1 ENTRY

 Ch Riefra Mon Cherie

1st place: no 25 – Red-smut bitch with white chest markings. A strong headed bitch, yet with a feminine expression. She has a short strong foreface with a strong under jaw and tight clean lips with a correct scissors bite. Strong black nose and dark well shaped eyes that match her coat color and are set wide apart, enhancing her expression. Beautiful round bone on parallel legs that are set wide apart with good strong feet and pasterns. A tad long in back but with level top line and well-developed loins and ample angulation in the well-arched short and muscular neck that flows elegantly into a deep brisket with well-sprung ribcage, giving her the appearance of maximum power for her size. Strong hindquarters that are well muscled. Tail set on low and carried correctly. Movement is very sound; parallel both coming towards and going away, with ample drive. A terrific bitch that was handled well and who commanded my attention. A pleasure for me to have her awarded BEST BITCH AND RESERVE BEST IN SHOW.
